Future Chefs: Competition among Roseburg 5th graders teaches more than just kitchen skills
ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Elementary school students in Roseburg are showing off their cooking skills this week.
13 fifth-graders will compete in the fourth annual Future Chefs Competition at Joseph Lane Middle School.
This year's theme is Healthy Asian Fusion food.
Organizers say the competition helps kids learn skills both in and out of the kitchen.
"They're learning to read; they're using math with their measurements," says Kyle McKen, Nutrition Services Director. "It's not all about throwing everything in a bowl and mixing it up; it's reading the recipes, doing measurements with the ingredients."
The event is open to the public.
It's this Thursday, March 8, at 5 p.m. at Joseph Lane Middle School in Roseburg.
