Former commissioner Winters appointed to fill vacancy left by Robertson

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Mike Winters, a former Douglas County Commissioner, has been appointed to fill Doug Robertson's seat until voters can select a replacement in November.

Robertson, a longtime commissioner, resigned effective July 31.

From a group of 10 applicants, a citizens pannel recommended Mel Cheney, Ken Brouillard and Winters as the final three.

The board cited Winters' experience as invaluable.

"That experience is going to be a big piece of what is going to help make this successful," said Commissioner Susan Morgan.

Winters was elected by voters twice as commissioner, holding office from 1995 to 2002.

"I know how the county works, and I think I can fit in very smoothly and the transition will be simple," Winters said.

In November, voters will decide who will fill the seat for the final two years of Robertson's term.
