Driver from Coos Bay, passenger from Yoncalla injured in deadly head-on crash
GRAND RONDE, Ore. - A head-on crash claimed the life of a Hillsboro man and sent a driver from Coos Bay and a passenger from Yoncalla to the hospital with minor injuries early Tuesday morning, Oregon State Police said.
The crash happened on Highway 18, west of Grande Ronde.
So far, troopers believe Ulysses Reyes Semsem, 58, of Hillsboro crossed into oncoming traffic in a sweeping curve around 4:15 a.m.
Semsem's grey 2015 Dodge Caravan collided head-on with a FedEx truck, troopers said. Semsem died at the scene.
The crash sent the FedEx truck 75 feet down an embankment into a creek along the Salmon River, police said.
The driver - Ruby L. James, 59, of Coos Bay - and passenger - Tony E. Kimber, 54, of Yoncalla - were taken to the hospital with minor physical injuries, police said.
The crash closed the highway for 5 hours. A hazardous materials team responded to clean up fuel and fluids that spilled from the truck.
