SUTHERLIN, Ore. -- Around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Douglas Forest Protective Association and Douglas County Fire District #2 responded to a natural cover fire in the 5000 block of Hubbard Creek Road, about 10 miles west of Sutherlin.

The first engine to arrive reported it was a quarter acre in size and burning up the hill in red logging slash.

Crews engaged but quickly discovered a downed power line on the western flank of the fire, officials said.

DFPA’s helicopter was used to check the head of the fire at a spur road above it and then cool down the area with the downed power line.

Ground resources, including firefighters, engines, tenders and a bulldozer, engaged on the eastern flank until the lines were de-energized.

Crews were to remain on scene of the fire for several hours Tuesday evening, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines.

The fire burned approximately 3/4 of an acre of slash and resulted from the downed power line.
