DINT: Transient had pot grow outside Riddle

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- Officials with the Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team say they arrested a man over the weekend, who was in the process of watering his illegal marijuana grow.

DINT officials came across John Calvin Scharer, 63, in the woods outside of Riddle on Saturday afternoon.

According to authorities, he was in the Union Creek drainage, and was growing marijuana on BLM forest land.

DINT officers removed more than 70 marijuana plants, which they say were mostly 2-3 feet tall.

Officials say when they contacted Scharer, he was watering the plants.

He is being charged with unlawful possession and manufacture of marijuana, and he's currently being held on $350,000 bail.

DINT officials say the man is a transient who lives in his pickup.
