Crash breaks power pole, Hwy 101 closed for 2 hours
WALDPORT, Ore. -- A man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries late Wednesday night after police officials said he drove off of Highway 101 and hit a power pole near Waldport.
Officials said Douglas Johnson, 51 of Yachats, was headed south on the highway when at around 11:25 p.m. he drifted off the roadway, went up and embankment and hit a few trees before crashing into a power pole. His Dodge Durango landed on its top.
The impact broke the pole, causing power lines to hang across the highway, state police officials said. The highway was closed for nearly two hours while crews worked to move the power pole off the road.
Johnson was taken to a Newport hospital before being transferred to Good Samaritan Regional in Corvallis.
There is evidence that shows alcohol could be a contributing factor in the crash, investigators said.
