SUTHERLIN, Ore. - Someone spotted a cougar near Ford's Pond in Sutherlin on Memorial Day.

Now the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife wants you to be on the lookout.

If you see a cougar, don't run, state wildlife officials said.

"It's normal prey item is a deer," said Bill Cannaday with ODFW, "and when a deer recognizes there's a cougar around, a deer will turn and flee. That's what triggers that mechanism for a cougar to chase."

Instead, make yourself look big, make noise - and fight back if attacked.

Wildlife officials encourage people to report cougar sightings to help keep residents safe.
