COOS BAY, Ore. -- Women supporting women who are furthering their education is the goal of the Coos County Republican Women organization.

They're hosting their second annual scholarship fundraiser next month.

The event will feature a fashion show, luncheon and silent auction.

Proceeds will fund the 2017 scholarships awarded to college and high school girls in Coos or western Douglas counties.

"I think what's really important is how our community comes together to support our youth and especially education,” says the organization’s Teri Grier. “I think it's a really great event for multiple generations, whether it's moms and daughters or multiple members of the family."

The scholarship winner will be announced and presented with the award at the event on May 6 at the Southwestern Oregon Community College Culinary Institute.

Last year’s recipients of the scholarships were Alexis Kay, a senior from Reedsport Charter School and Hailey Riley, a senior from Coquille High School. Both were awarded $500 scholarships to defray costs of attending college.
