Bethel School District puts restrictions on Valentine's Day, angering parents

Parents upset over Valentine's decision to avoid exclusion in schools

LANE COUNTY, Ore. - There was an overflow of angry parents at the Bethel School District Meeting on Monday night, where most parents were upset about the district's decision on encouraging students not to bring cards or candy to school on Wednesday for Valentine's Day.

The Bethel School District has scheduled a special board meeting to hear public comments only on the situation. The meeting will be on Thursday night at Shasta Middle School, starting at 7 p.m.

The spokesperson for the Bethel School District, Pat McGilvary, has said that the district "can not intentionally plan an event that can exclude children,"which would include Valentine's Day.

He says that children are still allowed to bring cards and candy on the holiday, but students will not be allowed to pass them out until the end of the day.
