Barbecue competition raises money for children's healthcare fund

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Nancy Anthony and her husband Dick started this fundraiser 18 years ago.

"It's for the Kids for Mercy Foundation Children's Healthcare Fund," Nancy said. "We all started because everybody liked to bar b que and we figured nothing better to do than barbecue and raise money for the kids."

Volunteers saod the community turns out to raise money for children having to travel outside of Douglas County for medical treatment.

"Giving the gift of assistance to families who are unfortunately medically fragile and need a little extra assistance," said Lisa Platt on the Mercy Foundation board.

Nancy said the event has grown over the years.

"We figured if you're going to barbecue and kind of compete," she said, "you should do it for a reason so we chose to do it for the kids. and we get a lot of help and support."
