Athlete and homecoming queen takes part in national pageant
MYRTLE CREEK, Ore. - South Umpqua High School's athlete of the year was also voted homecoming queen by her peers.
Rory Petterson, 18, said she was shocked when she was then invited to compete in the America's Homecoming Queen pageant in Memphis, Tennessee.
She said she enjoyed the experience.
"There's no swimsuit, no talent," Petterson said, "but you are interviewed, there's a speech, there's a 2-minute video you send in before, and then you go on stage and say what you're going to do with your life, and then you have an evening gown competition."
Petterson finished in the Top 10 but said she won't be doing any more pageants.
She plans to play volleyball at Umpqua Community College and then transfer to Oregon State University to study veterinary medicine.
