Barbie gets more realistic body types: Curvy, petite, tall
WASHINGTON (WJLA) - The skinny, blonde Barbie you grew up with is getting a major makeover just weeks before her 57th birthday.
Mattel has unveiled three new body types for the iconic doll. After facing criticism over Barbie's unrealistic body shape, Mattel has announced the dolls are now available in curvy, petite, and tall models, as well as the original Barbie body type. Each doll is available in different skin- and hair-color combinations.
If the original Barbie were a real woman, she would stand 6 feet tall, weigh 100 pounds, and have a 39-inch bust, a 19-inch waist, and the hips of a prepubescent boy, according to Medical Daily.
Barbie.com says "girls everywhere now have infinitely more ways to play out their stories and spark their imaginations through Barbie. Along with more overall diversity, we proudly add three new body types to our line."
The Barbie website says this is just the beginning, "from offering products that feature more empowering and imaginative roles to partnering with best in class role models, we believe in girls and their limitless potential. #YouCanBeAnything."
The release of the new body types comes after declining Barbie sales. According to Time, Barbie global sales dropped 3 percent in 2012, another 6 percent in 2013, and 16 percent in 2014.
Changing the original Barbie is risky, but the hope is to make Barbie look a little bit more like the average woman.
