Veggies make filling snacks. And when it comes to calories, they're a bargain.
"Because vegetables are mostly water, at most you're getting between 10 and 50 calories per half cup serving," says Jayne Hurley, senior nutritionist with the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
She reminds us that veggies are loaded with vitamins and minerals and other nutrients that can do your body good.
"People who eat more veggies than people who don't, they have lower risk of heart disease and stroke," Hurley said.
Green leafy vegetables are rich in magnesium. Some studies show this might help reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes.
"The ones that may be particularly helpful in lowering the risk are things like spinach, Swiss chard, lima beans, arugula and peas," she said.
Green veggies, especially kale, spinach, radicchio and turnip greens are high in lutein which might be good for your eyes.
